Miracle Field in Mauldin celebrates 20th anniversary

20 years ago a dream was hatched to provide a ballfield that offered an opportunity for handicapped youngsters and adults to enjoy the game of baseball. That dream was realized when former Mayor Dennis Raines threw out the first pitch to open the new ballpark “ Miracle Field”.

With only two other miracle fields in the state, Mauldin joined the forward thinking recreation Departments to build these Fields of Dreams.

Former Mayor, Dennis Raines said, “Of all the different avenues my life’s career brought to me the Mauldin Miracle League was by far the most rewarding as we truly provided the children with disabilities an opportunity to have some fun playing America’s favorite sport”.

The National Miracle League motto is “Every Child Deserves a Chance to Play Baseball” – through a lot of hard work by a lot of volunteers we were able to fulfill that dream for several hundred children in the Upstate of South Carolina over the past twenty years.”

The “Miracle”energy was shared with other communities .

Raines  continued, “I did meet with the Civic Organization and the government officials in Union County to talk to them about getting a field in that area started and also helped Greenwood get their field started at the Burton Center.”

“The first season we had over 25 kids participate. We soon reached over 100 as we began two different age groups for children with more abilities to play.

Presently the league boasts a total of 165 youth participants and 50 adult softball players.
