MAULDIN, S.C. — The City of Mauldin is seeking public input on stormwater drainage issues to assist with the completion of a citywide storm-water master plan. Meetings will be held on Monday, Feb. 5 from 4 to 6 p.m. and Monday, Feb. 19 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Mauldin City Hall, where representatives from KCI Technologies, Inc. (KCI) will be on hand to gather input from residents about storm-water drainage problems and specific locations in Mauldin that are prone to flooding. KCI will also instruct residents on where they can send any photos or videos of flooding within the City. 

Residents who are unable to attend in person can submit feedback through an online form at bit.ly/mauldinstormwater.

“I encourage Mauldin residents to get involved in this endeavor, to ensure we address the issues they face,” said Council Member Jason Kraeling, chair of the public works committee. 

The City of Mauldin contracted with KCI in 2022 to perform a citywide stormwater modeling project. Since then, KCI has conducted a survey of Mauldin’s stormwater infrastructure to create a stormwater flooding model. Public input from residents will help KCI to calibrate and finalize that model, and once completed, KCI will release a storm-water master plan that will show flooding ‘hotspots’ in the City with an infrastructure plan to address them. With a storm-water master plan in place, the City of Mauldin will be able to apply for federal storm-water remediation grants. 

“Storm-water drainage is a major concern for our residents, and it’s an issue that Mauldin City Council is working to address,” said City Administrator Seth Duncan. “These public meetings are a key step in the process of creating a storm-water master plan that will identify flood-prone areas within the City and allow us to apply for federal grants for storm-water mitigation efforts.”

This work is funded by a $500,000 Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Emergency Management Division (EMD) grant that was awarded to the City of Mauldin and the City of Fountain Inn to assist with stormwater infrastructure planning. FEMA has made those funds available as part of the Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC) 2021 Grant Program. Mauldin received $250,000 from the grant.
