Sentinel Veteran of the Month

The Simpsonville Sentinel presents our Veteran of the Month, John Moberly a U.S. Navy Veteran, currently living in Boiling Springs, SC with his high school sweetheart, wife and retired Nurse, Vicki. Proud parents of two daughters that continued in the medical field, both becoming NICU nurses, working with newborn babies requiring intensive care. What a great legacy!

S662-1.jpgS662-2.jpgJohn was born in St. Louis, Missouri and grew up there, eventually going to Missouri University for a year before he received his lottery number for the Vietnam draft. John decided to join the Navy and spent a total of 6 years between active and reserve time, nearly being killed when an enemy missile exploded beneath his Destroyer, the U.S.S. Epperson off the coast of Vietnam. The ship managed to limp in for repairs, and thankfully no one was killed.

Following his military service in a combat zone, John returned to college to finish his bachelor’s degree in business management. Working his way up to VP of Sales for several

Fortune 100 companies such as Johnson & Johnson, Hershey’s, and Sprint among others.

Always concerned about our veterans, John started Veteran’s Lunch Corps in early 2020, with weekly meetings every Friday at 11:00 at the Costco store in Spartanburg. This group boasts over 200 members including two WW 2 veterans, age 96 and 98 years old! They look forward every week to getting together with their veteran brothers and sisters, no agenda, just talking, laughing, and reminiscing.

Next time you’re at the Costco on Blackstock Road in Spartanburg on a Friday morning, stop by the Food Court,

and thank this awesome group of veterans for their dedication and service.

John’s life lesson from his time in the Navy, was how to build a team on trust and respect,

and it has served him well throughout his life.

God Bless John and Vicki, their 2 daughters and 4 grandchildren!♦
