Column: Inn the Know

As we approach the final months of summer, the anticipation of election season draws nearer. Local elections carry exceptional importance, directly influencing our communities. Local elections determine the individuals entrusted with making crucial decisions that have a direct impact on our everyday lives versus state and federal elections, which hold significance in shaping broader policies and governance which affect the entire region or country.  From shaping local infrastructure development to trash collection, implementing public safety measures, expanding community services, and fostering positive economic growth, the choices made by elected officials in local government significantly shape the quality of our immediate surroundings.

By exercising our right to vote in local elections, we embrace our role as active participants in shaping the future of our neighborhoods. Through the power of your vote, you determine which concerns and aspirations are represented and addressed by those in positions of leadership.

Fountain Inn’s election method adds a unique dimension to the democratic process. In our city, both council members and the mayor are chosen by the residents. What sets it apart is the election process is at-large, allowing all residents to cast votes for council members across all six wards, not just the one they live in. This approach offers a valuable opportunity for engagement, enabling residents to have a say in selecting representatives for every part of the city. It fosters a sense of unity and shared responsibility, ensuring the entire community’s interests are thoughtfully considered in the decision-making process.

Taking part in these elections goes beyond civic duty; it drives positive changes in our communities. Our collective involvement enhances our community’s well-being and instills pride in actively contributing to our city and society. Voting in local elections brings democracy to life, giving an opportunity for each citizen’s voice to be heard.
