City Unveils Simpsonville Arts Center

Simpsonville, S.C. — After two decades of planning the transformation of a beloved historic building into a hub for the arts, the City of Simpsonville is set to unveil the newly renovated Simpsonville Arts Center.

In partnership with theater group Mill Town Players, the City is hosting the inaugural event at the Arts Center on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at 110 Academy St. The program follows the dedication of a sculpture by the Simpsonville Arts Foundation, Inc. at 6:45 p.m. outside the Arts Center.

Mayor Paul Shewmaker said the City is extremely proud of how great living in Simpsonville is.

“We’ve been putting together a lot of good things, and unveiling the Arts Center just adds another jewel to our vital little city,” said Shewmaker, who will give remarks at the unveiling. “We are delighted to be partnering with the Mill Town Players. Between their performances and the Center’s focus on the arts, this is going to be great for our residents and a great reason to come to Simpsonville.”

Those in attendance Tuesday night will sit in a renovated auditorium that boasts a new sound system, lighting, seating and windows and an updated stage area. A self-guided tour after the program will take attendees to a completely redone green room for performers like Mill Town Players actors and singers.

Mill Town Players Executive Artistic Director Will Ragland said the theater group is honored to be the first resident theater company in Simpsonville.

“The Arts Center is sure to quickly become a gathering place for families to make life memories together,” said Ragland, who will reveal the theater company’s first season of shows Tuesday night. “Our plays and musicals will bring an added vitality to an already strong quality of life for Simpsonville. Our mission will remain the same: bringing you the highest quality entertainment at the most affordable prices. We can't wait to get started!"

Shewmaker said there is even more on the way for the Arts Center and City of Simpsonville.

“Simpsonville is simply better and better: it’s simply home.”

Shoemaker continued,” What a turnout we had Tuesday night. The place was full and people were standing in the aisles. I’m filled with gratitude for the support from the community. The Arts Center building is dear to the heart of Simpsonville residents because of its history as a school. So many of us have fond memories of seeing performances there. I talked to more than one person who had even sweeter memories of performing on that stage. We’re so glad to preserve this history.

Now we start a journey creating new memories in what I believe is the best live theater stage in the Upstate. This is transformative and so exciting. It will do so much to enhance our quality of life through a thriving cultural and arts scene. Theater goers will spend their money at local restaurants, boutiques, and hotels so this is great for Simpsonville businesses too. What a wonderful investment in our city.”■
