Flying for the Fun of It – Introduction to Flying

Flying aircraft includes several broad categories:  commercial aircraft – mostly jets – which carry large numbers of people over long distances; military aircraft, which protect our country, spacecraft, which travel through the atmosphere on their way into space, and again upon their return.  

The fourth category is private aircraft – which includes more vehicles than the other three combined.  

Private aircraft, like automobiles, are flown to reach destinations, or simply for the pleasure of going for a ride.

Private aircraft generally fall into one of four categories:  airplanes, ultralights, gliders, and helicopters.

Flying in an Airplane

Generally private airplanes have seating similar to an automobile:  two seats or four seats, with six-seaters also available.  

Private airplanes are generally the best type of aircraft for flying to destinations.  Most have a single propeller attached to a single engine.  

But for those willing to pay the price and cost of ownership, twin-engined airplanes with two propellers are fairly common, offering greater speed.  Most twins are six-seaters.

Flying in an Ultralight

S1316-2.jpg“Ultralights” is a category that extends from versions that look and operate like small airplanes, down to ultralights which are nothing more than a large kite-like wing with the pilot strapped in and a small motor and propeller strapped to the pilot’s back like a backpack.  

Ultralights are generally used just for recreation, with the intention of returning to the location of their departure.  They are generally not suitable for traveling long distances.

Flying in a Glider

S1316-3.jpgGliders are towed aloft via a rope attached to an airplane.  When the glider has reached the desired altitude, the glider pilot releases the rope.  The glider pilot might keep his flight near the airstrip of his departure, or travel towards some intended destination.  

Glider pilots search for “thermals” – air currents rising upwards.  On a hot day, the sun will warm open fields enough to generate thermals, which can be used to gain altitude.

Glider pilots also look for mountains where air currents flow upwards on one side, and then maneuver their flying to stay within those air currents to gain and maintain altitude.  

The record distance for a glider flight was set in January 2026.  The flight was 1,112 miles long, starting from Minden, Nevada (near Tahoe) and landing at Garden City, in western Kansas.  The average speed was 94.5mph, and the flight lasted 12.5 hours.  Most of the flight was flown at 20,000 to 28,000 feet.  

Flying in a Helicopter

Helicopters have no wings.  Instead, their whirling blades serve as wings as well as propulsion.  Helicopters are generally not intended for long-distance flying.  

Helicopters do not need a runway; they can take off and land vertically.  That makes them ideal for use as a flying ambulance, to quickly get accident victims to a hospital.  For the same reason, helicopters are also important for military operations.  

Personal helicopters are available as two-seaters and as four-seaters.  They usually tend to be novelty aircraft.  They are more complex and more expensive to operate than an airplane.  However, their advantage is that they can land and take off at a smaller landing site than the long runway required for airplanes, gliders, and ultralights.

What Flying Requires

Four forces act on every aircraft:  gravity, lift, thrust, and drag.  The most obvious force is the Earth’s gravity, which is always present.  Flying requires a force to combat that gravity, to get off the ground; that force is lift.  The wings of an aircraft create lift when moving through the air with enough speed.  That movement through the air is caused by the thrust generated by the propeller.  Drag is the force which limits the speed of an aircraft’s flight.

Aircraft generally require more maintenance than a car.  For safety’s sake that includes a mandatory inspection.

Every type of aircraft has its own attractions.  Every type answers the desires of the pilots who take to the air in that type.  This is flying for the fun of it!
