Fountain Inn Planning Commission Vote on annexation request ends in 3-3 tie

With one member absent, six Planning Commission members heard staff advice and public comments from Fountain Inn residents as well as citizens from surrounding areas but did not make a recommendation to City Council. Three members voted for annexation, while three opposed it.

The Planning Commission chairman stated that a tie vote means no decision is made; it neither approves nor rejects the annexation.

The issue will be presented to City Council at their next meeting on Thursday, March 12th.

Mayor GP McLeer stated, "The council will consider multiple courses of action to address the tie vote. They may approve, deny, table the matter, refer it back to the Planning Commission, or pursue alternative legislative actions.”

Normally, a Planning Commission recommendation requires a two-thirds vote of council to overturn their decision. However, since a tie vote is a no decision, how then will the council proceed?

The meeting is scheduled for 6:00 PM at the council chambers, located at 300 Wall Street in Fountain Inn.
