Flying for the Fun of It – Triple Tree Fly-in

One of the country’s biggest aviation events happens each September near Woodruff, South Carolina:  the Triple Tree Aerodrome’s annual fly-in.

S1155-1.jpgS1155-2.jpgTriple Tree holds a number of fly-ins every year, as well as other events (see the article “Flying for the Fun of It – RC Model Airplanes” in the June issue of the Sentinel), but for pilots across the country as well as from other countries, the annual fly-in is the event not to be missed.

The September fly-in is a week-long event.  Many pilots and their families arrive in campers on Monday, and spend the first part of the week socializing with friends.  But Friday and Saturday are the busiest days, with seminars, workshops, and more.

That included presentations by the Founder, Director, and current management team of Triple Tree, and by President Darren Pleasance of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) on the current state of General Aviation (GA).  As the graph shows, thanks to the work of the AOPA and others, GA is a growing endeavor!

The subjects covered in the seminars included Michelin aviation tires, building and restoring aircraft, Concorde batteries, safety wiring, the Recreational Aviation Association, the rebuilding of a B-17 and a B-24, the experience of being hijacked, piloting the U-2 airplane, what it was like to be Elvis Presley’s pilot, and the unique Delta Hawk jet-fuel powered diesel engine.  The workshops featured hands-on experience with engines, avionics, and more.

The Triple Tree Fly-In packs a lot to do and to learn into a very few days.  For pilots, that makes the Triple Tree Fly-In an exciting annual event not to be missed.
