Mauldin, Political

August 12, 2025 by Taft Matney

Councilman's Corner

It’s Almost Election Time Again.

When I first ran for Mauldin City Council, I did it because I love this city. This is where I grew up, this is where my wife and I established our family, and I’ve always believed in giving back to serve the place that gave me so much.

S1114-1.jpgI’m running for re-election to Mauldin City Council Seat 1 to continue building on the progress we’ve made and to keep working for a city that delivers opportunity, safety, and quality of life for every resident.

During my time on council, I’ve been honored to serve in multiple leadership roles. I’ve chaired the Recreation Committee, served on the Public Safety Committee, and currently chair the Economic Planning and Development Committee. I also serve on the Finance Committee and the Building and Development Services Committee. Each of these roles has given me the opportunity to contribute to policies that move Mauldin forward while protecting the values we share.

Over the last few years, we’ve seen tremendous momentum in Mauldin. We’ve welcomed new businesses, invested in infrastructure, and taken meaningful steps to create a stronger, more connected community. From revitalizing underused areas to planning for smart, sustainable growth, we’re shaping a city that’s ready for the future.

None of this happens by accident, though. It takes consistent effort, collaboration, and a willingness to make the tough decisions, so before I say anything else, I want to thank my colleagues on council and most importantly each member of our city staff for working every day to improve Mauldin.

Public safety has always been one of my top priorities. As someone who previously served on the Public Safety Committee, I know how critical it is that our police officers and firefighters have the resources and support they need to protect our community. Whether it’s ensuring competitive pay or investing in updated equipment and facilities, I’ve supported every effort to strengthen the backbone of our city’s emergency services.

At the same time, economic development remains a key focus. As chair of the Economic Planning and Development Committee, I’ve worked to foster responsible growth by encouraging private investment, cutting red tape, and helping local businesses thrive. I want to see Mauldin continue to attract new opportunities while maintaining the character and charm that make our city unique.

I’m also proud of the work we’ve done to be good stewards of your tax dollars. As a member of the Finance Committee, I take the responsibility of budgeting seriously. We’ve taken a conservative approach to spending while still finding ways to fund major projects and keep our city financially strong.

One of the things I’ve learned in this role is that listening matters. Whether it’s a phone call or a conversation in the grocery store, I value every chance to hear from the people we serve.

Being a member of Mauldin City Council is about more than casting votes. It’s about relationships, trust, and showing up. It’s about understanding that behind every decision are real people and families who count on us to do what’s right.

There’s more work ahead. As our city continues to grow, we need experienced leadership to guide that growth thoughtfully. We need to keep strengthening public services, investing in infrastructure, and finding ways to make Mauldin an even better place to live, work, and raise a family.

That’s why I’m asking for the opportunity to continue serving you. I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished, but I’m not finished yet.

With your support, I’ll keep working to ensure Mauldin’s best days are still ahead, and I’m asking for your vote.
