On Friday, July 18th, Life Scout Theo Umbhauer of Troop 795 completed his Eagle Scout Project at First Step Realty in Mauldin, SC. Theo’s project involved constructing a blessing box aimed at supporting the area’s growing homeless population, which has increased by 25% this year alone.

The idea originated when Maria Godfrey, Broker and Owner of First Step Realty, approached Theo with the concept of a blessing box as a potential Eagle Project. Theo was thrilled by the opportunity. He had long aspired to make a meaningful contribution to his community, and this project offered the perfect chance to do so.

With the help of his troop, friends, and family, Theo not only built the box but also stocked it with essential items. Inside, individuals can find necessities such as water, snacks, and hygiene products. A special feature of the box is the inclusion of survival pouches, assembled by Theo and his mom. Each pouch contains a small water bottle, snacks, a pair of socks, baby wipes, a hair comb, a toothbrush and toothpaste, and other vital supplies.

Theo’s vision extended beyond simply providing basic needs—he wanted to offer something lasting and uplifting. After thoughtful discussions with his mom, he decided to include books in the box, giving families access to reading materials they might not otherwise afford.

This blessing box is the first of many planned for the Mauldin community. Theo and Maria are proud to have laid the foundation for a meaningful and enduring initiative in the Upstate.
