Column: Inn the Know... from the Desk of Shawn Bell

Each July, communities across the country observe National Parks and Recreation Month — a time to reflect on the impact of parks, recreation, and outdoor spaces on improving lives. In Fountain Inn, this month is more than a celebration. It’s a reminder of the tremendous value these spaces hold for our health, our families, and our community.

S1098-1.jpgFountain Inn is incredibly fortunate to have a variety of parks and recreational opportunities woven into the fabric of our City. Whether it's enjoying a peaceful walk along the expanding Swamp Rabbit Trail, cheering on a little league game at the Emanuel Sullivan Sports Complex, playing a round of tennis or co-ed softball at PD Terry City Park, or cooling off at the splash pad in Downtown, our outdoor spaces are where memories are made, wellness is nurtured, and community truly thrives.

Under the dedicated leadership of Recreation Director James Rice and his tremendous staff, the department has worked tirelessly to expand recreational offerings for every age and interest. From youth sports to the ninth season of our thriving co-ed adult softball league, our programs are engaging more residents than ever. The City also recently launched a new youth football conditioning camp, helping young athletes build foundational skills, practice safety, and develop a team-focused mindset.

Our success is made possible by deep collaboration across City departments. The Recreation team develops the activities, while the Public Works Grounds Crew ensures every park is clean, cut, and safe for use. The Fountain Inn Police Department supports safe environments for families to enjoy. Together, this behind-the-scenes teamwork keeps our parks not just operational, but exceptional.

Today, Fountain Inn offers six public parks, an indoor Activities Center, and over four miles of walking trails—all totaling more than 50 acres of recreational space, well above national standards for a City our size. Each park offers something distinct and meaningful for our residents.

One of the most exciting developments on the horizon is the expansion of the Swamp Rabbit Trail. A new 3.5-mile section will mark the first trail connection between two cities since the original link between Greenville and Travelers Rest in 2009. This is more than a recreational project; it’s a significant investment in connectivity, mobility, wellness, and economic opportunity. This new segment will link neighborhoods, schools, and emerging developments, creating safe routes and stronger connections for residents of all ages.

And the vision doesn’t stop there. The City is actively working towards bringing the trail into the heart of downtown Fountain Inn—unlocking future tourism, boosting small business visibility, and expanding access for even more of our community.

This July, we encourage you to explore all Parks and Recreation Month has to offer. Join us for themed events, a community pickleball tournament, movies under the stars at PD Terry Park, or the INN the Parks Rock Hunt, featuring hand-painted stones from our vibrant 55+ Club. And don’t forget, registration is open now for fall sports!

Fountain Inn’s parks belong to everyone. They are spaces where we grow stronger—physically, mentally, and socially. Our investment in parks is an investment in the future of a healthier, more connected, and more vibrant Fountain Inn.

See you INN the parks!
