Mike Newman, Former Simpsonville Planning Commission Chairman Dies at 74

ROCK HILL - Michael L. (Mike) Newman, 74, of Rock Hill, previously of Simpsonville, passed away on Tuesday, April 8, 2025.

S1041-1.jpgBorn September 14, 1950, in Kenton, OH, he was a son of Wilbur and Carol Newman. He was preceded in death by his father. Mike is survived by his mother, his son, Kevin (Wanda) Newman; grandchildren, Julia Newman and Carter Newman; brothers, Mark Newman and Milan (Tammy) Newman; sister, Joy (Darrell) Miller and his nieces and nephews.

Mike attended Indian Lake High School and graduated in 1968 from Sidney High School. After graduation he joined the United States, Army serving over eight years. His overseas tours of duty included Vietnam, Thailand, and Okinawa. During his military career, Mike earned several awards including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with 4 Campaign stars, 2 Good Conduct Medals, Army Commendation Medal, Bronze Star, 2 Meritus Unit Citations, and Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry (Unit).

After his military service Mike spent many years in the Financial Services/Mortgage Industry serving in different capacities. He spent several years on the Simpsonville Planning Commission and served as chairman for two terms. Mike. also aided City Council members with property searches and advice on planning and development issues.

During his last two years, he dedicated his time enjoying and supporting his grandchildren in diverse sports and school events. He enjoyed being a grandpa!

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Michael's honor can be made to The Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758516, Topeka, KS 66675. Burial services were held on Thursday, April 17, 2025 (10:00 AM EST) at M.J. "Dolly" Cooper Veterans Cemetery, 140 Inway Drive, Anderson, SC 29621.●
