Column: Inn the Know... from the Desk of Shawn Bell

S1034-1.jpgKeeping our City clean and beautiful is a priority in Fountain Inn, not just in the spring but throughout the year. Our hardworking Public Works Department diligently maintains our parks and the most frequently walked streets in our downtown district, ensuring our community remains an inviting and enjoyable place for residents and visitors alike.

Each year in May, as a unique service to our residents, our Public Works team dedicates a month to collecting items that our sanitation team typically does not collect. This annual initiative allows residents to dispose of larger or more cumbersome items in a convenient manner. Registration is required to participate, and all participants must adhere to the guidelines.

Curbside recycling pickup service has become an increasingly rare commodity; however, we offer it!  With a simplified registration process and a small startup fee of $80 for the specified bin, residents can have recyclables collected alongside their trash bi-weekly.

Fountain Inn is also a proud founding partner of Keep Laurens County Beautiful (KLCB), which was established in 2022. This organization engages the public in county-wide efforts to reduce litter, promote recycling, and enhance beautification through impact, education, and enforcement. We also partner with Keep Greenville County Beautiful, an organization dedicated to inspiring citizens to take daily actions to prevent litter, educate younger generations about environmental responsibility, and provide resources for litter prevention solutions. City representatives actively serve on the boards of both organizations, ensuring that Fountain Inn remains at the forefront of regional beautification efforts.

In addition to these partnerships, we regularly host Community Cleanups throughout the year. We also provide litter pickup gear to residents who wish to take the initiative in keeping their neighborhoods clean. Our upcoming Spring Earth Day Cleanup will take place on Tuesday, April 26, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., with a kickoff event at the Pavilion. Registration is encouraged; for more information, please visit www.fountaininn.org/470/Earth-Day-Community-Cleanup

We believe keeping our community litter-free is more than just a responsibility—it’s a commitment to the health, safety, and pride of Fountain Inn. A clean city enhances property values, fosters a stronger sense of community, and ensures future generations can enjoy the beauty of our town. While our City organizes structured cleanup efforts, we encourage every resident to take part in their own way, whether by picking up litter during a daily walk, recycling responsibly, or educating others on the importance of environmental stewardship.

Together, we can make a lasting impact. Let’s all do our part to keep Fountain Inn clean and beautiful, not just in the spring but every day of the year.
