Informed People By Cynthia Horner

Informed People Create Honest Government

I came to South Carolina in 1993 specifically because I liked the values, and the focus people have about children and families. I felt a sense of belonging to a neighborhood. Neighborhoods with good people insisting on a good start for their young and doing something about it. I wanted to be a part of that. I have grown to realize what I felt was the comfort of conservative Christian values. Moving forward without your neighbors joining you in moving forward, is not advancing mankind – it is dominating over others. I am proud to have grown to be an active part of living and promoting those conservative values. I am now putting myself in a place to fight for those values.

"It is not only up to our leaders to do what is right, but also up to We the People to do what is right."

South Carolina is not alone in working to preserve these values. Each state is free to have its sovereignty, its own diversity, its version of values, laws, and codes to live by. You will find we are in good company as we share these conservative values with many states like Mississippi, Tennessee, Texas, Florida, Utah, Arkansas, Idaho, Oklahoma, and South Dakota. United we stand, divided we fall is as important today as it was in the mid 1700’s when it was first quoted referring to the colonies. There is a balance between unity of our states and enough diversity to have sovereignty.  An old proverb says:

“If you want to go fast, go alone, if you want to go far, go together.”

What are these values I found so appealing in 1993?

Limited government that operates by the consent of the governed.

Free markets and free enterprise. We should not be governed by corporations but by people. This happens because we value people more that dollars. It is the private sector that drives our economy.

All people are created equal and in the image of God therefore all humans have dignity and value and are judged by the content of their character, not their zip code or amount of their income.

Taking responsibility for our lives. Our beautiful Republic works when we take individual responsibility. It is not only up to our leaders to do what is right, but also up to We the People to do what is right. Those who do not take responsibility are telling us they want to be ruled.

I am proud to work with the people of South Carolina to take responsibility needed to enjoy our freedoms.■
