Simpsonville resident celebrates Georgia National Championship

Glenn Davis, a long time resident of Hunters Woods in Simpsonville, was ecstatic to watch his former team beat Alabama for the National Championship. A Georgia alumnus and former football player, Davis recalled a time when he played on a team that participated in two bowl games…the 1968 Sugar Bowl in New Orleans and the Sun Bowl in 1969, played in El Paso, Texas.

“We got slaughtered by Nebraska in the Sun Bowl,” lamented Davis

“We came into that Sugar Bowl game as number two in the country! We also won the SEC Championship that year.” Davis commented .

“Our coach, Vince Dooley thought it was wise to send us down to New Orleans a week before the game to get acclimated to the weather. We lost that game 16 to 2. Fumbled several times and only scored a safety against Arkansas. I think we may have partied a little bit during that trip as well.” added Davis.

“We have stayed in touch with that 1968 Sugar Bowl team and went to the 50th reunion in 2019. The picture you see here is signed by that entire team! I was a defensive end and a special teams player during those games. What a great memory!” Glenn reflected.
